A cataract is a clouding of the normal clear lens inside the eye just behind the pupil. When the lens becomes cloudy, the light rays cannot pass easily through it and vision becomes blurry, both for near and distance objects. Sensitivity to glare in bright sunlight, and distortion or ghosting of images may also occur.

Cataracts are the most common cause of failing vision over the age of 60 in Australia. They are a normal part of the aging process in both eyes, but usually develop at different times. Less commonly, cataracts can occur in babies, children and young adults. Other causes include eye and systemic diseases, eye trauma and as side effects of medication, such as Prednisone.

Cataracts are not a growth or film over the eye, and are not caused as a result of overusing the eye, or eyestrain. You generally can't see your cataract in the mirror. There is a 95 to 98 % chance that you will see better after cataract surgery.

The Surgery:

• Adult cataract surgery is done under local anaesthesia. A specialist anaesthetist numbs the eye locally and you may also have a mild 'Twilight Anaesthetic'. You can talk and answer questions throughout the procedure.
• Sedation may be required.
• When you arrive at the hospital you will be given drops to dilate your pupil.
• Your total stay in hospital is usually 2 to 3 hours.
• You will need to lie on your back for approximately 30 minutes.

Our eye surgeons use the latest technology and lenses to perform the cataract surgery. During the surgical process, a Phacoemulsification (ultrasonic) probe is used which breaks the lens into small particles which are then taken out through a small incision around 2.2-2.4 mm with no stitch. Patients usually see well the next day. Our eye surgeons offer the latest lenses available which are suitable to your eye, and allow good vision both for distance and near without glasses. Our eye surgeons also offer toric lens used to correct astigmatism.

Some people will still need to wear glasses for distance but most will need reading glasses only.

It is important to remember that cataract surgery will not correct poor vision caused by other eye problem such as Macular Degeneration {aging of the back of the eye}, Glaucoma and Diabetic changes.
