Dr Smita Agarwal is a senior comprehensive ophthalmologist.

She has particular expertise and interest in refractive cataract surgery, complex cataract surgery including post corneal refractive cataracts, anterior segment eye diseases, and corneal cross-linking for progressive Keratoconus, glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.

Smita completed her ophthalmology training at Monash Medical Centre before undertaking her advanced training in cataract surgery at the same institution. She also completed Graduate Diploma in Refract Surgery through University of Sydney.

Smita is a member of the Specialist International Medical Graduate Committee (SIMG) of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and in February 2025 earned a certificate in “AI in Health Care From Strategies to Implementation” from Harvard Medical School.

Her innovation of the instrument (Smita’s Epithelial Cell Curette) and technique to remove epithelial cells from under the LASIK flap and SMILE pocket recently won runners up trophy at the prestigious ASCRS meeting held in Boston 2024.

Smita is regularly invited to speak and participate in expert panels at various ophthalmology meetings and conferences globally and has published research in a number of peer reviewed journals over her career.

Smita provides comprehensive ophthalmology services to her patients. She conducts clinics from her rooms in Wollongong, Nowra and Warilla and is a visiting medical officer at several public and private hospitals located in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven region, formerly the Head of Ophthalmology at Wollongong and Shellharbour Hospitals, 

Smita is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong and is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney.

She has been instrumental in the setting up of Wollongong Refractive Laser Eye Institute, the only facility on the South Coast of NSW that offers laser vision correction procedures like SMILE, LASIK and PRK and boasts of the latest state of the art equipment.

Smita has a deep sense of responsibility to the under privileged communities. She regularly donates her time providing free ophthalmology services to such communities in Fiji, India, Peru and Cambodia.
